Overview

The Master’s Degree Course in Historical and Social Sciences aims to provide graduates with an in-depth knowledge of history, based on a thorough mastery of the tools and methodologies of historical research. Particular attention will be paid, on the one hand, to the types of documentation, their potential and forms of analysis; on the other hand, to the most significant stages of the historiographical debate, with a specific focus on recent developments.
The educational objectives include:
- in-depth knowledge of historical sources and their potential;
- full mastery of the main issues under debate in recent historiography;
- full awareness of the forms and methods of historical research, based on the relationship between the objectives to be achieved, knowledge of appropriate documentation, awareness of the historiographical context and the elements with which to initiate a process of comparison;
- ability to narrate, disseminate and communicate research results.
The course provides a broad and in-depth knowledge and skills in the fields of history from antiquity to the present day, sociology, economics and statistics, political science, law, anthropology, literature and linguistics (EU languages).
In addition to lectures, seminars and workshops, teaching activities include internships at public administration institutions, both state and local (archives, libraries, superintendence offices, etc.), companies or associations operating in the cultural heritage sector, in service management, cultural promotion, basic and technical-professional training, and the enhancement and management of territorial resources.
The course aims to train professionals to perform high-level roles in activities related to the cultural services and industry sectors and specific cultural and research institutions. The course also prepares students for teaching (classes A12, 19, 22, 54), in accordance with the procedures laid down in the regulations on the recruitment of school staff.

Career opportunities

Historical
role in a work context:
- Works independently and critically on documentary heritage in archives, foundations and cultural institutes, museums, businesses, and public and private administrations. – Contributes to defining the cultural and institutional project of current, deposit and historical archives.
- Oversees the implementation of scientific and research initiatives planned for the protection and enhancement of historical heritage.
- Conducts and coordinates documentary research and historical reconstruction activities.
- Produces storytelling for specialist and general audiences.
Skills associated with the role:
Possesses knowledge, skills and competences useful for working in public and private administrations, primarily in the field of archives, libraries, museums, cultural bodies and foundations; in public and private research centres and companies that require personnel specialised in the research and management of documentary material with high scientific skills.
Possesses knowledge, skills and competences relating to the technical and cultural factors that have marked the fundamental stages of human history, knowledge of which is essential for competently carrying out tasks of responsibility in state administrations (e.g. in the cultural heritage and public education sectors) and local administrations (departments and offices for the promotion of cultural activities and territorial organisation).

Teachers in lower and upper secondary schools
role in a work context:
Graduates who meet the requirements and have passed the regular admission competition may teach in the following classes:
A12, Literary subjects, lower secondary schools
A19, Philosophy and History
A22, Italian, History, Geography, lower secondary schools
A54, Art History

Skills associated with the role:
The knowledge, skills and competences acquired through the entire course of study, as well as the credits required for the various competition classes and those relating to PF24, will enable graduates to participate in training and selection for teaching positions in lower and upper secondary schools.
Career opportunities:
Master’s degree graduates who have the credits required by current legislation will be able to take the entrance exams for teacher training courses for classes A12, A19, A22 and A54.
Historical and cultural disseminator and operator
role in a work context:
- Organises and manages events, exhibitions
- Carries out educational and dissemination activities for the public in archives, libraries and museums
- Works as an operator in the classrooms of MAB facilities
- Produces information materials and educational courses, also in collaboration with schools

Skills associated with the role:
Possesses knowledge, skills and competences for the dissemination and distribution of expert knowledge to a general audience

- Television and radio networks and film institutes
- Newspapers and magazines (print and digital)
- Museums, archives and libraries (classrooms)
Editor, journalist
Role in a work context:
- Oversees editorial planning for the drafting of catalogues, illustrative texts and educational and scientific publications for theatre, film, television and telematic productions.
- Develops editorial projects, reviews texts in both traditional and digital formats, and edits historical works, researching sources and documents that can be used by experts in other fields.
- Develops and produces journalistic texts and historical analysis programmes
skills associated with the role:
Possesses the knowledge, skills and competences necessary to transfer historical and social knowledge into forms of use related to the world of journalism and highbrow entertainment.
